Tracking Training in Rutland-Precise Ground Scent Work

What is Tracking Training?

Tracking is the natural skill of following human scent across the ground. It is not a trick and it is not a sport invented to keep owners busy at weekends. Dogs have been doing this work for thousands of years. We simply teach them how to do it clearly, calmly, and with purpose.

At Rutland Tracking Association, tracking means your dog learns to slow down, use their nose properly, and solve problems independently. There is no frantic running, no over-arousal, and no constant instruction from the handler. The dog works. You learn to read them. It is honest work.

Why tracking changes dogs

Most modern dogs live very comfortable lives, but they are mentally under-employed. Walks become routine, toys lose value, and behaviour issues creep in. Tracking fills that gap.

When a dog tracks, their nervous system shifts. Breathing slows. Focus sharpens. The dog becomes calmer and more settled, not just during training, but afterwards at home. Owners often notice improved confidence, better impulse control, and a dog that is far easier to live with.

Will my dog enjoy it?

Tracking is not about speed, strength, or flashy obedience. It suits:

  • High-energy dogs that need a proper outlet

  • Nervous or anxious dogs that lack confidence

  • Reactive dogs that struggle with overstimulation

  • Calm dogs that simply need a meaningful job

Age and breed matter far less than people expect. If your dog can walk and eat, they can learn to track.

Our Structured Tracking Training Method

Most clients start with no background in scent work at all. That is expected. Everything is taught step by step, with clear structure and progression in our tracking training programme. There is no pressure to perform and no comparison with other dogs. It is about learning a skill together.

What owners enjoy most

Clients often tell us the same things:

  • “I finally understand what my dog is telling me.”

  • “My dog is calmer after tracking than after a long walk.”

  • “This is the first activity where my dog truly switches on.”

  • “It feels like real work, not just exercise.”

Tracking builds a different relationship. One based on trust, patience, and teamwork.

Why Rutland Tracking Association?

The Rutland Tracking Association was created to do this properly. Structured training. Clear standards. No gimmicks. No rushed progression. Just solid foundations that work.

If you are looking for something more than another class, something that genuinely benefits your dog and deepens your understanding of them, tracking is well worth considering.

Once you see your dog work with their nose, everything else starts to make sense.
